Manville -- Today’s SCOTUS decision to revoke the constitutional right to an abortion is terrifying. This ruling and the repercussions for women and their families cannot be measured. For more than 50 years, women have been able to make their own decisions related to reproductive health and their bodies, yet the Court basically just said that women can no longer make these choices for themselves. Six appointed judges just put basic, fundamental rights into the hands of the states when just earlier this week they said the states could not make those same decisions on regulating guns. So no longer is a women permitted to make her own health decisions. It is now lawmakers who are not impacted in anyway who can tell women what is best for them and their families, even in the event of rape or incest. In fact, Justice Thomas wrote in his concurring opinion, that the Court should reconsider other rulings including those protecting the use of contraception, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriages. When will it stop?
We are lucky that New Jersey respects women and their choices. Governor Murphy has shown women he will fight for them and their right to make their own decisions. Today he stated, "In New Jersey, women will always have full autonomy over their bodies and the right to make their own medical decisions." We stand with the Governor, and we stand with all women. We urge our legislators to continue their work in securing reproductive freedom for all and we encourage those who are angered about this decision use their power and vote this November. The only way we can stop this erosion of rights is to vote for candidates who respect individual rights, who respect the right for decisions to be made by the individuals. It stops by us voting them out.
